Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)

Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)

15% amino acids (3 out of 20 different amino acids) are the branched-chain amino acids, namely leucine, isoleucine and valine. An amino acid must have the chemical structure of “Branched-Chain”, or in other words, a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) is an amino acid having an aliphatic side-chain with a branch (a central carbon atom bound to three or more carbon atoms). The "Branched-chain" refers to the chemical structure of these amino acids.

BCAAs stimulate the building of protein in muscle and possibly reduce muscle breakdown. BCAAs are used for reduced brain function in people with advanced liver disease and for a movement disorder often caused by antipsychotic drugs. They are also commonly used to improve athletic performance, prevent fatigue, reduce muscle breakdown, and other purposes, but there isn't enough reliable information to support these other uses.

One of the most popular uses of BCAAs is to increase muscle growth. people who consumed a drink with 5.6 grams of BCAAs after their resistance workout had a 22% greater increase in muscle protein synthesis compared to those who consumed a placebo drink.

Some research suggests BCAAs can help decrease muscle soreness after a workout. Several studies show that BCAAs decrease protein breakdown during exercise and decrease levels of creatine kinase, which is an indicator of muscle damage.

BCAA supplements can be consumed before, during and after exercise. For optimal results, use them in conjunction with a healthy and balanced diet. If you’re looking for an extra leucine boost, make sure brown rice and whole-wheat foods are a part of your regular diet. Laybio is a bulk supplier BCAAs.
